The Vietnam coffee mug: This is an example where an object can remove all direct memory of the subject matter, banalized, but good in a way to put that time in world history to rest. Memories have faded so much, such that a mug is possible.
The poignancy of this fact—that memories transform with time—is a frequent source of inspiration for artists and designers, who have long grappled with how to best convey the tenuous relationship between reality and perception.
